Boost Your Portable Radio Performance

Boost Your Portable Radio Performance

In most applications, the OEM "rubber duck" antenna, as fitted to the majority of handportable radios serves a functional purpose, allowing satisfactory communications in most operating scenarios.

But what if you need a better range or are operating on the very fringe of your communications network – what can you do?

The OEM antenna is often a compromise between size & performance. Having a longer better-performing antenna would not lie well with the majority of operators looking for a small portable radio. So the compromise is, in most cases, a short helically wound rubber encapsulated wire antenna of 10-15 cm length. Some manufacturers also have “stubby’ versions of the standard antenna which are shorter and even less efficient.

Amphenol Procom have a range of longer full ¼ wavelength antennas (approximately 45cms long @ VHF frequencies and 20cms @ UHF frequencies) which far outperforms the OEM antennas. Tests have shown that an 8-10dB increase in signal level can be achieved, which could be the difference between getting your emergency call heard or receiving that all-important announcement.

Before purchase, check the implications of this antenna in terms of the radio IP rating, EMF and SAR levels to understand how this antenna could affect such features.
